Pekingese

The Pekingese comes to us from China as you might expect, and the Little Lion Dog was known there in very ancient times when they were strictly a pet of the royal class living in the imperial court.  They were treasured and pampered  beyond belief .  Special eunuchs were designated to care for them and to steal one was a crime punishable by death. The Chinese were willing to kill the dogs to prevent them from being taken out of the country, but eventually some did find their way to Europe in the late 1800's.  The Pekingese's coat is magnificent if properly maintained, very long with a thick undercoat and full ruff.   It may be almost any color, sometimes with a black mask. Daily brushing is almost a necessity.  The Pekingese has been described as headstrong and willful but is also possessive and postive toward their  family members as long as they are treated like the spoiled little characters they naturally want to be. Because they are not always thrilled with strangers, they make good watchdogs.  Pekes do not require a great deal of daily exercise, so they are ideal for living in an apartment or condominium setting  Size:  8-9" in height, 10-14 pounds.
