Persian
Persian cats were first brought to Europe from the Middle East in the early 1600's by an Italian, Pietro della Valle. Longhair cats were previously not appreciated in Europe as prior to this time cats were used solely for catching vermin on farms. Serving this function, a longhair coat was a liability, and, for the most part the cats in Europe at the time were thus shorthaired. While the original Persians were almost all grey in color, today cat registries recognize nearly 50 different colors for these beautiful animals. Persians are known for their gentleness, and for adjusting easily to new environments. They are quiet and affectionate and love human companionship. No wonder they are now the most popular cat in the UK! Persians require some care because of their long coat. Daily brushing is recommended to avoid matts and to keep the coat looking its best. Because of their "pushed in" faces, these cats have a tendency to have discharge from their tear ducts. Daily cleaning with warm water will remove the debris and ensure that the eyes do not become infected. Owners of these wonderful cats will need to make time for this maintenance, but will reap a huge reward in return!
