Japanese Chin
The Japanese Chin actually probably originated in China and was at one time called the Japanese Spaniel. Sailors coming from Europe stole these dogs from Japan and thereby brought them to the rest of the world where they sold them for extremely high prices. Commodore Perry acquired some and gave Queen Victoria a pair of these special dogs. Japanese Chins can come in three coat types: profuse which is long and silky, shorter which is silky but not lengthy and coarse which is a textured coat. Profuse coat is the preferred one and the one most often seen in our present day Japanese Chins.The color of the coat will either black and white or red and white (the red made be sable, brindle, lemon or even orange). Japanese Chins do shed and their coat will require brushing to look its best. Bred to be a spoiled companion dog, they are also intelligent, affectionate and responsive. They do not require an excess of exercise, so they are ideal for apartment or condo settings as well as homes. They travel well and will want to be part of all family activities but are sensitive to heat so should never be left alone in a closed car for instance. Most Japanese Chin owners rave about the breed, and often purchase more than one. Size: Up to 9 inches and usually 7 pounds or less.
