Shih Tzu
It is unknown when the Shih Tzu originated as a breed, but they are thought to have come to China from Tibet or another part of Asia as early as the 7th century A.D. In China this "lion dog" (the Chinese meaning of Shih Tzu) became an immediate hit with the aristocracy, and they became a regular participant in court life. While the breed continues to stay true to its original purpose, that is to say as a pampered companion pet, it may be slightly smaller today than at one time. Shih Tzus were first introduced to the United States after World War II when returning soldiers brought them back from Europe. They are one of the top five toy breeds in popularity, largely because of their charming personality and their ability to be equally suited to house, apartment or condo living . The Shih Tzu's coat may be any color and if allowed to grow out to its natural full, long appearance will require daily attention to prevent tangles. Some owners opt to trim the coat shorter to minimize the amount of grooming needed. Shih Tzus do not shed and are considered to be one of the more hypoallergenic dogs, so they may be ideal for persons with allergies. They do not need a great deal of daily exercise; far more important are human companionship, comfort and security. Size: to 10 1/2 inches, 10-16 pounds, ideally.
