Papillon
Papillon in French means "butterfly", which refers to the extraorinarily long-fringed ears that this breed develops when mature. In actuality, the Papillon is probably a dwarf spaniel which was introduced to Europe through Spain. The Papillon quickly became a favorite of the French and Italian royals, including such famous members as Madame de Pompadour and Marie Antoinette. The royals regarded the Papillon as a "must have" adornment, and that truly is a role that they fill perfectly. They are affectionate and adore their family and will, in fact, serve as a good watchdog. While this breed does not require extensive exercise, their owner must commit to regular coat grooming in order for him to look his best. The Papillon's coat is primarily white, with accents in any other color except liver. The color patches normally cover both ears and both eyes, with a white blaze down the forehead and nose that further adds to the "butterfly" appearance. Size: to 11 inches and up to 10 pounds.
