Havanese
Not surprisingly, the Havanese is the national dog of Cuba. They are descendents of several old breeds that were introduced into Cuba from Spain, and were known, at various times, as the Havana Silk Dog or Spanish Silk Poodle. Bred to be a spoiled lap dog of the aristocracy, they are now a fine family pet, watchdog and children's playmate, with a naturally affectionate temperament. The Havanese's coat is dense, silky and wavy, but light in weight to insulate them from hot weather. This "silk" may grow to be 6-8 inches in length and will require some attention to keep it looking its best (unless the owner opts for a shorter cut) and may be any color or combination of colors. The Havanese does not shed and may therefore be ideal for the owner who needs a more hypoallergenic pet. Though a toy dog, they are sturdy and energetic, requiring some daily exercise even if it is just chasing toys around the house. They are equally at home in apartment or house and are very intelligent and easily trained. Size: 8 1/2 to 11 1/2 inches, 7-13 pounds.
