The Maltese is actually a form of toy spaniel. One of the oldest of the toy breeds, it is thougtht that the Phoenican traders introduced them into Europe via the island of Malta. Malteses were originally owned by members of the upper clases in ancient Greece and Rome. They were all the rage with titled women in the time of Elizabeth I in England as well. This is a sweet tempered breed that is intelligent, alert and fun loving creature, with a long, flowing, beautiful pure white coat that contrasts dramatically with its dark eyes and eye rims (points). Care must be taken to groom the Maltese frequently because, though he does not shed, his coat can become badly matted if neglected. Professional grooming will be necessary if the owner feels unable to devote a fair amount of time and attention to this dog's appearance. The Maltese is loaded with personality and loves to be pampered constantly -- in fact he was born to it! This dog was designed for the lap hundreds of years ago, and he has never forgotten that. Size: up to 10 inches, up to 6 or 7 pounds. His diminutive size makes him a great travel companion wherever you go.
