Chinese Crested
This unusual looking breed is thought to have actually originated in Mexico, not China. The first Chinese Cresteds were brought into the United States in the 1890's on ships coming from the Orient. Gypsy Rose Lee, the popular stripper of that day, was fascinated by the breed and did much to promote it in this country. There are two varieties of this breed: the hairless and the powder puff. Hairless Cresteds have no hair on their body and are warm to the touch. They have merely a "crest" of long, silky hair on their head, a "plume" on the lower part of the tail and "socks" on all four feet. The Powder Puff has a long silky coat over its entire body. Cresteds are very meticulous , and the hairless variety obviously needs no grooming. However, they must be protected from extreme cold or heat as they may become chilled easily or sunburn if exposed to sun without a sunscreen. It is important too, to apply a hypoallergenic moisturizing lotion to the hairless' skin to maintain suppleness. The Crested is a good tempered breed and gets along well with everyone. Full grown they usually range up to 13 inches and will normally weigh less than 12 pounds. Several coat colors are available. Ask to see "GG" if she is in the store when you come.
