Tibetan Terrier
The Tibetan Terrier originated in Asia where they were raised in a hidden valley by monks who so revered them that they would not sell them to anyone. They were considered lucky for the owners and pampered like a child in a family. Occasionally they were given to special guests which is, in fact, how they were introduced into Europe. A British doctor who had saved someone's life was given two, which he took home and bred to start the Tibetan Terrier line in that country. Tibetan Terriers were not introduced to America until 1956, but the popularity of the breed has been building since then. The Tibetan name for this breed is "Tsang Apso" which translates to "shaggy dog from the province of Tsang". One of the most important things to remember is that there is not a trace of terrier in their background; they were merely called that by the Europeans because all small breeds were referred to as terriers. More likely their heritage comes from the Spaniel or small Mastiff breeds.Tibetans have hair instead of fur, so the coat grows continuously and will require some trimming as it fills out. Weekly brushing is necessary to avoid severe matting of the dense double coat. An adult Tibetan Terrier will most resemble a small English Sheepdog. The coat may be virtually any color or combination of colors. The Tibetan can be happy living in either an apartment or home setting, but will require some exercise every day because they are very energetic. They will fare very well with agility or fly ball training, which challenges both their high energy level and their intelligence. The Tibetan is amiable and affectionate and will love being a part of daily family life, mixing in well with both people and other pets. As a rule mature Tibetans will be approximately 14-16 inches tall and 22-23 pounds.
