Coton de Tulear
The Coton de Tulear derives its name from its place of origin and the description of its coat. Coton is the French word for cotton, which refers to the Coton's special soft, cottony feeling coat. Tulear is the the capital of Madagascar which was where the Cotons were first found, brought there, it is believed by pirates in the 16th and 17th century. They were only introduced to the rest of the world in the 1970's, when they began to be imported into Europe and the United States. The Coton is a hypoallergenic dog since its coat is hair, not fur, so it may be ideal for individuals with a known allergy to dogs.
