American Eskimo
Despite its name, the American Eskimo Dog had no known association with Eskimo culture. It is a "spitz" type dog derived from various European dogs of this class that have the double, dense coat and curled over the back tails and erect triangular ears. It has black "points" referring to the color of its nose, lips and eye rims. The Eskimo comes in only one color: bright white, and its coat requires frequent brushing and bathing to look its best. With proper care, this is a stunning pet who is both intelligent and agile. In fact American Eskimos were frequently used in circus acts during the 19th century because they quickly learned tricks that amazed the audiences, and this resulted in their spreading popularity in the United States. The American Eskimo is an alert dog who serves as an excellent watchdog and takes his obligation to protect his family and home seriously. He is affectionate and good with children and will accept strangers well after he is introduced to them. The Eskimo needs both physical and mental exercise daily because he loves to work. A long walk is helpful, as are play sessions that challenge his intelligence. Eskimos come in three sizes and may range in height from 9-19" when full grown and from 6-25 pounds.
